Tank’s Royal Rumble – UFC 11.5

When the UFC was brought about, the idea was to find out what martial art reigned supreme and it seemed like every event a man specializing in only “street fighting” was eliminated in record time. That is until Tank Abbott came along. While Abbott seemed to have mixed results, every time he was in the Octagon something very “street” happened. Diego Sanchez, the cross bearer – UFC on Fuel TV

Rounding out the UFC’s cross bearing walkouts is easily the most memorable. In fact, Diego Sanchez doing almost anything that somebody else does will be just a little more memorable. He was in full swing holding up a palm-sized crucifix, speed-walking to the Octagon as intense as they come. While the event saw Stefan Struve, a classic knockout by Stipe Miocic, TJ Dillashaw and a standout fight between Diego and Ellenberger, it’s still that cross-bearing walkout we see to this day.

The Stockton Slap

There’s no telling how long it has been around the 209, but UFC fans across the globe were introduced to the Stockton Slap at UFC 47 when Nick Diaz took on Robbie Lawler. After stalking around the Octagon letting the world… and more importantly, Robbie Lawler, know that Stockton, CA was in the building, Diaz landed the signature open hand. The slap put a confused smile on the face of Lawler and just in time for Lawler to wipe the grin off his face and get his head back into the fight, Diaz followed it up with a shot that left him wobbling. The Slap was eventually taken overseas to Japan where Diaz dusted it off in Pride, then to Strikeforce before bringing it back to the UFC and being most generous with his slaps in his fight with Carlos Condit. Although Nick Diaz hasn’t seen time in the Octagon for almost 5 years now, the Slap has lived on through his brother Nate who has taken the Slap to new heights, giving out plenty of his own that are reserved for the A-Listers such as Anthony Pettis, Conor McGregor, even Dana White. Askren’s first press-conference – UFC 235 press conference

Conor McGregor wasn’t the only “must see” presence at UFC press conferences anymore. After trading Demetrious Johnson for Ben Askren, the hype was met immediately. His first fight, Robbie Lawler. Must see. His press conference was no different. Somehow, Askren had gotten under the skin of Kamaru Usman before the press conference so far that it seemed like the majority of the verbal sparring was between Askren and Usman. Two men not even fighting. New fans realized how a wrestling-heavy fighter with sub-par striking was such a fan favorite. While Askren had a controversial win over Lawler, Usman put a beating on Tyron Woodley. Will their paths cross? We can only hope!

“It’s like f****** anarchy here” – TUF 5

TUF 5 could best be summed up with just this one scene. When Jens Pulver opted to pick the first fight, the pick of the first fighter went to BJ Penn and instead of just picking the fighter like every coach had no problem doing for the past four seasons, Penn demanded anybody who wanted to be on his team, raise their hand. When Dana White finally got a hold of the situation, Pulver chimed in, encouraging anybody who wanted to be with BJ to keep their hand up and they can be on his team. It was the most unnecessarily long and chaotic team picking in the history of TUF. By a large margin.

328. Good eye, Mazzagatti – Ultimate Fight Night Silva vs Irwin: At UFN: Silva vs Irwin, there was a very repetitive formula. One that could have and should have been avoided.

Round two: Two pokes to the eye led Anthony Johnson to shoot for a takedown that halted the rest of the round.
Round three: Poke to the eye led Anthony Johnson to collapse and effectively lose the fight.

Sinead O’Conner’s live walkout performance – UFC 189

Conor McGregor sells out arenas, sells out press conferences and sells out weigh ins. He sells out MMA and boxing venues. It’s almost ridiculous the star power he comes with. At the height of his popularity it was nearly impossible to imagine him even more polarizing. Dropping Notorious B.I.G. and replacing it with Sinead O’Connor rising up from the tunnel to sing “The Foggy Dew.” Team McGregor or not, it’s hard not to get goosebumps watching “Notorious” turn to salute Sinead on his way to the Octagon.

2. Conor becomes double champ – UFC 205: The lights couldn’t have been brighter and eyes couldn’t have been more fixed on the main event from Madison Square Garden. Whether you love or hate him, every fight fan alive was all in for the “Notorious” Conor McGregor and he would have to go through one of the toughest tests of his career if he wanted the entire country of Ireland to explode: “The Underground King” Eddie Alvarez, 28-4 with almost every award and title he’s come in contact with. McGregor’s fans did more than enough to keep Alvarez’ fans in Philadelphia because when he landed a few early knockdowns in the first round the MSG began to shake. Alvarez made it out of the first but Conor made UFC history when he put Alvarez down for good in the second round. He hid none of his excitement as he strutted over to grab the Irish flag and deliver the Octagon interview of a lifetime. “I’d like to say from the bottom of my heart, I’d like to take this chance to apologize to absolutely nobody. 1. Forrest vs Stephan - TUF 1 Finale: It had been over four years since Zuffa purchased the UFC. Popularity was growing but not fast enough. It had gone from niche sport to… niche sport with a few more fans. Mainstream respect and attention weren’t zeroing in the way Dana White and the Fertitta brothers had imagined. In a last ditch effort, The Ultimate Fighter was born. Cable TV could now look behind the curtain and beyond the cage. And while the show was popular, there were no talks of a second season. The future of the company hinged on the free Ultimate Fighter Finale card. The card underperformed with many forgettable first round finishes and when it came time for the finals, Diego Sanchez snatched the middleweight Ultimate Fighter contract so fast many don’t remember it happened. It’d be hard to imagine a fight so spectacular it could single-handedly save the company.

Yet there has never been an example of fighters rising to the occasion better than when Forrest Griffin and Stephan Bonnar met for those 15 minutes on April 9, 2005. It’s not a far cry to say that night Forrest and Stephan saved all of mixed martial arts.

18 men on the card, it only took two to dictate the future of a cable network, the UFC and MMA. If there was only one must-see performance, it would be the performance of Forrest and Stephan. Greatest fight of all-time. Most important fight of all time.
